Engraving is a process by which a metal plate is incised with a tool called a burin or graver. The engraved plate – usually a copperplate, but it can be made of zinc or steel - can then be inked and used with a press to make prints on paper. The resulting prints are generally in black ink, but different ink colors are sometimes used, as well as different papers.
Engraving techniques are also used in diverse crafts for decoration purposes, and to make stamps and banknotes.
The most famous engravers include Albrecht Dürer, William Hogarth, Gustave Doré.
